Masterclasses – New for summer 2021!

DTP masterclasses are a brand new, exciting concept for 2021!

We very much want our PGRs to help shape a programme that will be of most interest to them in the future. To this end, there will be a series of launch events covering each cluster during summer 2021. Ideas and feedback generated from these events will be used to create a full masterclass programme to be delivered live (and, we hope, in person) during the summers of 2022 and 2023.

There are five clusters which incorporate the broad scientific areas within our DTP. Each cluster is lead by a team of senior academics from each partner university (Leeds, Sheffield and York), who are DTP supervisors. All other DTP supervisors are working alongside the cluster leads to develop the masterclass programme within each cluster and some PGRs have already started getting involved. These are the five clusters:

  1. Development, Disease and Neurobiology
  2. Microbiology
  3. Molecular and Cell Biology
  4. Plant Science
  5. Structural biology/biophysics/chemistry

The full list of supervisors/co-supervisors in each cluster can be downloaded here.

This list will be updated as and when there are any changes. If you are a supervisor/co-supervisor and you feel your research would fit better in a different cluster, please contact Catherine Liddle, DTP Co-ordinator (email: WRDTP@leeds.ac.uk).

The details of the launch events for each cluster are below, together with contact details for the cluster leads so you can get in touch to be involved and/or to offer feedback and ideas at any time.

The launch events will be held via Zoom so they will be available to everyone across the DTP. You do not need to book to attend. Simply make sure you have put them in your calendar then turn up so you don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to learn and shape the cutting edge science that addresses global challenges, such as, the impact of climate change, a healthier old age, and sustainable food production, land use and energy production.

You can attend as many launch events as you wish and we encourage you to do so. You are not limited to those events within your field of study. This is a great opportunity to explore ideas within your own field and also to widen your knowledge in other areas. Ultimately, the intention is that all masterclasses are available to all PGRs and supervisors.

Note: More information will be added to this page as launch event details are confirmed. PGRs and supervisors will also be alerted to updates via email. The Zoom links to the events will be sent out to everyone via email.

Event description:

This Launch meeting will bring together PhD students and PIs working in the broad area of Development, Disease & Neurobiology across the White Rose DTP Network. It will provide an overview to students of the research and facilities at the three universities, with short talks from present DTP PhD students to give a flavour of the breadth work supported by the DTP. The final focus of the meeting will be on hearing from both PIs and PhD students on the types of Masterclasses that the group could put together over the next few years, with the aim of bringing students together across the network to enrich the DTP experience.

1:00pm -1:30pm

10 minute overview from Leeds, Sheffield and York PIs on research areas

1:30 – 1:50pm

3 x 5 minute presentations from current PhD students on their project

1:50 – 2:30pm

Open discussion and decision on structure of Masterclass 2022

When: 13:00 to 14:30 hrs, Friday 17th September 2021

How to join: The meeting will be held on-line via Zoom or similar platform. The meeting link will be sent to PGRs and supervisors via email.

Microbiology

Cluster leads
Stephane Mesnages.mesnage@sheffield.ac.uk
Ryan SeipkeR.Seipke@leeds.ac.uk
Gavin Thomasgavin.thomas@york.ac.uk

Event description:

  1. Each of the named representatives presents a 30 minute overview of all the microbiology going on in their institute
  2. Each institute has 2 PIs present a short vignette (15 mins) of either i) a collaborative project across (at least) 2 WR Unis or ii) a talk about a methods/approach that is a USP of that institution.
  3. The students then bring their posters (not made for this session) to a GatherTown session for 45 mins. PIs, PhD and PDRAs all share their knowledge
  4. We present the PhD students with a list of suggested ideas for Masterclasses for 2022 within the scope of the subject, with the aim of running 2 each year. Aim to have 6+ already that they can then choose from and their own suggestions also encouraged.

When: 14:00 – 17:00 hrs Wednesday 8th September 2021

A schedule will be circulated to you nearer the time.

How to join: The meeting will be held on-line via Zoom or similar platform. The meeting link will be sent to PGRs and supervisors via email.

Molecular and Cell Biology

Cluster leads
Stuart WilsonStuart.Wilson@sheffield.ac.uk
Michelle PeckhamM.Peckham@leeds.ac.uk
Daphne Ezerdaphne.ezer@york.ac.uk

Event description:

Each of the students who have agreed to help will give a short talk to help prime the discussion: reflecting on the types of tools, techniques, workshops, that they used to make their own research a success, using examples of their own research. Each of the supervisors will talk more generally about tools, techniques and workshops that they think might be useful to the student (with examples from their own students).  Talks should be no longer than 8-10 minutes.  The talks will be followed by an open general discussion with all supervisors and students to generate some great ideas for masterclasses next year!

When: 15:00 to 17:00 hrs Friday 16th July 2021.

How to join: The meeting will be held on-line via Zoom or similar platform. The meeting link will be sent to PGRs and supervisors via email.
