Self-assembled magnetic nanoparticle arrays: Rod-like scaffold proteins to precisely template the spatial organization of biomineralisation proteins.

My project

Proteins are the biological factories and building blocks that function perfectly at the nanoscale. Nanotechnology requires nanoscale precision for formation of devices which is extremely difficult to achieve reproducibly and cost-effectively. Our research aims to harness biology’s powerful ability to control the nano-formation of technologically important materials for devices.

This project will make the first steps towards a biological self-assembled data-storage platform by combining and modifying the proteins that biomineralise magnetic nanoparticle with long scaffold proteins that will accurately located the nanoparticles produced. Furthermore, the scaffold protein will offer an ideal platform for better understanding how the biomineralisation protein functions on a molecular level.
