Who it is for

This course is for current years 3 and 4 (i.e. 2017 and 2018 starters). This course is optional, which allows flexibility for those PGRs who are still catching up with their research following the impact of COVID lockdowns. However, please note that it is likely that this course will run bi-annually and is not likely to run next year. This means that if current third years do not undertake the course this year, they are likely to lose out on this vital training. (Current fourth years will have left in any case by this time next year).

There are jobs out there and we would therefore very much encourage you to sign up for this careers training, which will help you put yourself in the best possible position to make the most of those opportunities.

Course content

This highly pragmatic session will focus on five key areas:

  • Start exploring how to make the most of your last 2 years as PhD students to help you to be highly employable at the end of your PhD
  • Consider how best you can learn to articulate your competencies
  • Experience the use of a really innovative career tool – the Personal Business Model Canvas
  • Consider a spectrum of employment possibilities
  • Think about how you may become more strategic in your professional development approach

The programme will introduce you to the thinking behind why now is such a good time to start thinking about some of these issues, and some of the concepts behind planning your career.
You will then work through a process for helping you to identify the key elements that you need to be able to document and explain as part of the preparation for the next stage of your career – you
will have time to think about this, lots of tools and support to you, and the opportunity to both work things through with your peers and colleagues, and listen to the experiences of those who are
further ahead than you.

At the end of the training, we will run a virtual workshop together where we can talk through the issues and opportunities that have arisen from the work that you have done on yourself as an employable prospect.

Tutor

The course will be delivered by Caron Fraser Wood of The Mindset Method Ltd.
