Paul Bond

Next generation computer software for placing atoms in electron density maps

About me

I completed an MChem at the University of York in 2012. After working briefly as a software development consultant, I returned to the University of York where I was the computational officer for the York Chemical Biology Facility. My main research interests are in computational structural biology.

My project

My PhD project involves developing computational methods for automatic building of protein structures. Both X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy can give us a picture of the electron density clouds in a protein molecule. However chemists and biologists want to know about the layout of the atoms corresponding to those clouds. Automated software is used to build a three dimensional model of the atoms in the protein which explains the observed electron density.
