Structural analysis of acyltransferase proteins involved in O-antigen modification

About me

BSc in Biochemistry with a year in industry at University of York.
Year in Industry at MedImmune in Cambridge.
MSc by research at University of York working on the same family of protein that I am working on for my PhD.

My project

I work on acetyltransferase proteins from Salmonella that are involved in modification of the O-antigen. This family of acyltransferase proteins are involved in a wide range of reactions including root nodulation, and modification of peptidoglycan, macrolide antibiotics and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen.

Very little is currently known about the mechanism of this family of proteins, therefore, the aim of my project is to understand the structure and mechanism of these proteins and how they transport and transfer an acetyl group onto the O-antigen. I am using x-ray crystallography, NMR and other biophysical techniques to characterise this family of proteins.
