How do stomata work?

Increasing the water-use efficiency of crops is a major goal if food security is to be achieved, but this first requires a deeper understanding of the mechanism by which plants control water loss.

This project combines approaches of developmental biology, atomic force microscopy and molecular cell biology to analyse the mechanics of stomatal function, it’s relationship to whole leaf function, and its importance relative to stomatal density in the control of water loss in plants.
